U.S. professional surfer Tia Blanco has spoken out about how a plant-based had benefitted her career.
In an interview with Men's Fitness, the 20-year-old athlete attributed her energy and clarity to veganism.
A vegetarian since childhood, and a vegan for five years, Blanco also said that she believes plant meat burger brand Beyond Meat 'will change the world'.
She says: "Veganism has benefitted me in many ways, including my energy and clarity."
The pro surfer also acknowledges the increase in the number of plant-based food choices: "When I was vegetarian five years ago, I remember how hard eating out was, but things have evolved tremendously to where now as a vegan I have no problem."
Blanco, whose signature meal after training is a Hawaiian Beyond Burger, said: "I think Beyond Meat will change the world—for vegans and meat eaters alike."
And it's not the first time the athlete has endorsed a vegan diet; Blanco told media outlet Men's Journal earlier this year that she focuses on consuming whole foods to get in shape for a competition.
She said: "I feel healthier on a clean, whole foods diet that is very simple — especially during competition.
"And since a plant-based diet is less calorically dense than other diets, I need to make sure I’m eating enough food so I up my portions a lot.
"I think of veggies as nutrition and water, not a food where I can get energy so I don’t even count veggies when I’m counting calories and nutrition. For energy, I go to potatoes, whole grains, and starchy veggies. I’m obsessed with carrots and sweet potatoes."
