Whole Grains Prompt Weight Loss And Reduce Inflammation, New Study Says

But which whole grain product has the best effect?
All study participants have seen reductions in body weight‍

Switching from refined grains to whole grains can lead to weight loss and reduced inflammation, according to a new study from Denmark.

There were 50 obese and overweight people participating in the study.

All participants reduced their body weight and markers of systemic inflammation on the whole grain diet.

Whole grains consist of wheat, rye, barley, oats, brown and red rice, millet, and corn in dried form, cited the study published in the journal Gut.

However, researchers did not register any changes in the bodies' natural bacteria following the dietary change, as it didn't improve insulin sensitivity or affect the gut microbiome.

Study

Splitting the volunteers into two groups, the researchers made one cohort eat only whole grain foods for eight weeks; then, they consumed their regular diet for six weeks, followed by another eight weeks of eating refined grains.

The second group started with the refined grains, completing the study in reverse order.

Study senior author Tine Rask Licht explained that whole grains help people lose a little bit of weight by filling them up and increasing satiety.

She added: "Rye seems to have the best effect."
