Whole Foods Market will be adding vegan tuna sushi to its sushi cases in New York and Los Angeles next month.
The plant-based tuna sushi is produced by vegan seafood brand Ocean Hugger, which will be expanding its distribution to selected Whole Foods stores in the U.S.
Ocean Hugger uses 'Ahimi' for the fishless sushi: a tomato-based substitute for raw tuna.
Branded as the 'world's first fishless tuna', Ahimi is made from six natural ingredients and is also free of toxic chemicals that are usually found in tuna, such as mercury and PCBs.
The company's founder, James, Corwell, created Ahimi following a visit to a fish market in Tokyo and seeing the mass scale in which tuna are killed.
According to the Ocean Hugger CEO David Benzaquen, the tuna susbtitute can be used much like raw tuna in sashimi, poke bowls, and ceviche.
Ocean Hugger is planning to distribute the vegan tuna nationwide, along with launching 'Sakimi' - a carrot-based salmon alternative and 'Unami', an eggplant-based eel alternative.
