Vegan charity Veganuary says 2019 will be its biggest year yet - with an anticipated 300,000 people taking part.

The charity - which supports people as they try out a vegan diet throughout January - has seen year-on-year growth since its first outing in 2014 when 3,300 people took part.

By January 2018, that had skyrocketed to 168,500 official sign-ups from around the world, with many more people unofficially taking part.

Vegan rise

Speaking about why veganism is on the rise, Rich Hardy, Head of Campaigns at Veganuary, said: "Put simply - visibility! No longer a counter-culture, 'vegan' is now a word we see and hear everywhere - in shops and restaurants, in people's conversations on the streets, and in newspapers and magazines. It's not hype or a short-term trend.

"There's substance to its rise and that gives it credibility. Any movement or venture has to reach critical mass to carry on and succeed. We think veganism has reached that point and is now firmly on its way to the mainstream. It's also been helped by the technology that sits in our pockets.

"All of us can view footage of an undercover animal rights exposé with immediate effect if we so choose. With material like that so publically
available, it's helped get more people questioning what’s been hidden from them in our food production."
