Vegan campaigners have blasted cosmetics giant MAC for testing its products on animals.
The company originally operated a cruelty-free policy. Estee Lauder purchased a stake in MAC in 1995, allowing the brand to expand distribution, acquiring the whole company in 1998. In 2005, MAC was launched in China - meaning it chose to comply with the market's animal testing laws in order to maximise profits.
According to the company's testing statement: "MAC does not test on animals. We do not own any animal testing facilities and we never ask others to test on animals for us. While some governments conduct animal testing to prove safety before they will allow us to sell our products, we are advocating for change to prove there are alternatives."
According to the organization: "MAC says it doesn’t personally test on animals, so it must be cruelty-free, right? WRONG. It sells its products in China, where the government requires cosmetics companies to pay for cruel and deadly tests on animals.
"This means that rabbits and other animals are subjected to horrifically painful tests that can leave them blind or their bodies burned or swollen - often without any pain relief - before they're ultimately killed. All this in the name of 'beauty'."
peta2 adds: "If MAC cared about animals and truly wanted to be a leader in the movement to end animal testing globally, it wouldn't sell in China.
"Help hold MAC accountable by calling it out for leaving consumers in the dark, and ask it to stop paying for animal tests in China."
It is asking its supporters to create a post using a photo of a shadow-puppet bunny, tag @MAC, and ask the company not to leave consumers in the dark concerning animal testing, urging it to stop selling in China.
