Vegan Pizzeria To Compete In World Pizza Championships For First Time

A vegan pizzeria will be taking part in the World Pizza Championships for the first time this year.

Purezza, which has outlets in London's Camden as well as Brighton, will be the first vegan operation to compete in the prestigious competition this week.

The World Pizza Championships - or Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza - has been running since 1991 and attracts more than 6,500 independent pizzerias from across the globe. Competitors have up to 12 minutes to prepare and cook their pizzas using pre-selected ingredients, before presenting it to the judges.

"I can't wait to show the judges just how good vegan pizza can be," Purezza's Head Chef, Filippo Rosato, said in a statement sent to Plant Based News.

"Just to be able to compete and show off plant-based pizza at an event like this will have a huge impact on pizza culture not just in Italy but around the world - that's how important the Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza is. I've been working on a special recipe to wow the judges for the past few months, and I'm really excited to see what they think."

Purezza, which is hoping to pick up a prize at the event, was awarded National Pizza of the Year in the UK in 2018, for its Parmigiana Party pizza, and the PizzAward 2018 in Naples for Best International Pizza.
