The vegan meat sector is 'gaining momentum' as more people are interested in trying plant-based alternatives, according to new data from food consultants DuPont Nutrition & Health.
The organization claims that a 2019 analysis of 3 million internet conversations showed while people 'are motivated to alter their diets to include more plant-based foods' taste and texture are key factors in enjoyment of meat alternative products and many foods are missing the mark.
DuPont says these are the factors manufacturers should focus on if they want to gain ground within this growing sector.
"People are motivated to alter their diets to include more plant-based foods because they believe it will enhance their overall wellness, provide specific health benefits and help the environment," Mark Cornthwaite, Marketing Manager, DuPont Nutrition & Health, said in a statement.
"With consumers embracing more plant-based foods, the meat alternatives category is really gaining momentum, and there's lots of opportunity for growth.
"But gaps still exist in the marketplace. Our research shows people see taste, texture, and lack of variety in meat alternatives as barriers to eating more plant-based foods. Consumers want really fantastic plant-based burgers, breakfast patties, fajitas, sausages, to name a few."
