A new vegan donut shop will open in Philadelphia on August 26.
Dottie's Donuts - which began as a wholesale business before opening its first brick-and-mortar location in West Philly last year - has already developed a fan base of both vegans and non-vegans.
The new store, which will be in Queen Village, will have limited opening hours on August 23 before its official opening.
Owners Jeff Poleon and Matt Quinn are opposed to advertising their products as vegan, saying they don't want to alienate the non-vegan market.
"After years of working in the food industry, we realized that there were a lot of assumptions about vegan foods," explained Poleon.
"So when we decided to start our business, we decided it was just a donut."
The successful recipe combines coconut milk and a natural egg substitute, making the plant-based doughnuts extremely similar to typical ones.
Poleon added: "Vegan is a bonus point. Kind of broadens our customer base."
Popular doughnut flavors feature matcha vanilla, rose-water pistachio, chocolate hazelnut, and the Homer (pink glaze with Simpsons-esque sprinkles).
