Actor Jessica Chastain has stressed that 'animals are the ultimate underdogs' in an interview for the Evening Standard today.

Chastain, who currently stars in new movie Molly's Game, has revealed she has been a vegan for 12 years, laughing: "I was vegan before Beyoncé!"

'Underdog'

Talking about her childhood, the 40-year-old celeb explained: "I grew up rooting for the underdog."

"The person that no one believed in, who came from nothing and maybe had boundaries because of their gender or race. I’ll go into battle for them more than myself.

"And animals, too - they’re the ultimate underdogs."

Vegan

It's not the first time the Oscar-nominated actor has spoken out about her animal-free lifestyle.

Earlier this month, Chastain revealed she is committed to cruelty-free products and rescuing animals - as she 'adopted every animal [she's] ever had', including a three-legged dog.

But the actor, who is also a volunteer for animal rights organization Humane Society of the United States, doesn't believe 'everyone needs to be vegan'.

She explained: "It just means helping create healthier choices for society and for our hearts at the end of the day."
