The number of vegans in the UK is set to skyrocket by 327 percent by 2020, according to a new survey.

Around 2,000 adults were quizzed for the research by finder.com. According to the data, around one percent of Brits are currently vegan - around 700,000 people. The poll results suggest that over the next year, 2.2. million people will adopt veganism, increasing the vegan population to around 2.9 million.

The data says it is young people who are more likely to adopt animal products. "Generationally, the percentage of people who eat meat, and don’t currently intend to change, increases with age," say the poll results. "While 94 percent of those in the silent generation (born before 1945) and 86 percent of baby boomers eat meat, this figure drops to under two thirds (63 percent) for post-millennials (born after 1996).

Vegan boom

"With the rise of vegan-friendly products such as Greggs' vegan sausage roll, it's important to be savvy and shop around to make sure you're getting the best prices," Jon Ostler, UK CEO at finder.com, said in a statement sent to Plant Based News.

"Like any diet, there are ways to avoid falling into traps with overpriced specialty products.

"A little bit of research and intuitiveness in the kitchen can go a long way. It will also be worth keeping an eye on how Brexit may impact the price of food that we import into the UK."

Growing vegan population

"Veganism is an increasingly popular lifestyle for those who care about animals and the environment, or want to improve their health," The Vegan Society spokesperson Dominika Piasecka told PBN.

"This survey seems to be in line with The Vegan Society's own research which found there were 600,000 vegans in Great Britain in 2018, with the number quadrupling over the last four years.

"We would love for all the people who said in the poll that they intend to go vegan act on this idea, and we hope the predictions of the number tripling by the end of the year will prove true."
