UK Parliament has unanimously passed a motion to declare a climate emergency after Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, put forward the proposal during a debate in the House of Commons.

The UK is the first country in the world to declare an environment and climate emergency, which was one of the demands put forward by environmental campaigners from the group Extinction Rebellion.

While the motion recognizes current legislative action as 'insufficient' - the government doesn't have to legally act on it.

'Irreversible destruction'

"We have no time to waste. We're living in a climate crisis that will spiral dangerously out of control unless we take rapid and dramatic action now," Corbyn said.

"This is no longer about a distant future. We're talking about nothing less than the irreversible destruction of the environment within our lifetimes of members of this House."

'Our planet. Our future'

The Labour leader, who also stated that children striking from school, calling for environmental change, are 'ahead of the politicians' - referred to the climate crisis as 'the most important issue of our time'.

He added: "Young people know this. They have the most to lose. I was, like many members of this House on all sides, deeply moved a few weeks ago outside this Parliament filled with color and noise by children chanting 'Our planet. Our future'."
