Airline has added a hot vegan meal option to its inflight menu to meet growing demand for animal-free food.

The UK's third largest airline now offers penne arrabbiata, which customers can buy onboard.

In addition, the company has started putting vegan logos (as well as vegetarian and gluten-free logos) on its food products to make it easier for customers to choose appropriate options.

" and Jet2holidays customers constantly praise the extensive selection of food and drink on board our flights, therefore we are always looking at how we best keep up to date with current tastes and trends," Steve Heapy, and Jet2holidays chief executive, said in a statement.

"In line with our ethos of delivering a VIP customer experience, we are always looking at how we offer a great choice for our customers on board.

"We have worked closely with our food suppliers to source a meal that is not only a delicious choice for our vegan customers, but is also a great meal option for everyone on our flights. We hope our customers enjoy the latest additions."

Vegan options

In recent years, more airlines have been making an effort to cater to plant-based diners. At the end of 2017, budget Australian airline Jetstar started serving vegan meals following what it described as 'daily customer demand'.

Speaking at the time about the growing customer base for animal-free food, PETA's Corporate Liaison, Emily Rice, said: "The demand for cruelty-free fare is higher than ever, and forward-thinking businesses like Jetstar, who are listening to their customers and offering delicious, buy-on-board vegan options, will be flying high for years to come."
