Fashion publisher i-D has revealed that 16-year-old vegan environmental activist and Fridays For Future founder Greta Thunberg is the cover star of its Summer 2019 Issue.

The 'Voice of a Generation' issue features an interview with the campaigner, who has made global headlines in recent months, through her efforts, which include encouraging students from around the world to attend demonstrations demanding political action on climate change while 'on strike' from school, and asking the pope to take action.

In addition, Thunberg has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, as well as becoming the first recipient of the prestigious Prix Liberté.

Climate activist

"One girl's utter determination to try and stop the greatest threat humanity has ever faced has set off a global youth climate strike movement," an i-D spokesperson told Plant Based News. "16-year-old Greta Thunberg is the voice of a generation.

"Greta sat down with i-D's Clementine de Pressigny a week after the global youth strike on Friday March 15, which saw 1.4 million students from around the world ditch school for the day to demand that their future, and that of the planet, be protected.

"In the interview, the pair discuss the rapid growth of the youth protest movement, how she educated her parents on the climate crisis and dealing with depression at 11-years-old."

The activist speaks about how seeing images of pollution when she was a small child sparked a passion for environmentalism, telling i-D: "When I was eight or nine years old my teacher showed our class photographs of plastic in the ocean and deforestation. I couldn’t stop thinking about those pictures. They were stuck in my head. I thought it was very sad that no one seemed to care about what was going on."

She added: "When I became aware of the climate crisis I became depressed. I stopped talking, I stopped eating and I stopped going to school. I stopped smiling and I stopped having fun."

Thunberg also reasserted her commitment to her activism, saying: "Many people say that this movement has become so big and ask me if I’m proud, but we haven't seen anything yet. The climate crisis is only going to become worse, to become bigger and bigger and more urgent with time. This is not a one-time thing, this is our entire future."
