Starbucks Launches Vegan Cookie As Part Of Plans To Expand Plant-Based Offerings

The company says it is responding to consumer demand

Coffee giant Starbucks has launched a new vegan macadamia cookie as part of its drive to offer more plant-based food.

According to the chain: "Our vegan cookie includes oatmeal, macadamia nuts, almonds and coconut plus the delightful tang of dried cranberries.

"Scrumptious on its own and even better alongside a cup of coffee or tea."

At the end of March, the company revealed plans to expand its plant-based offering. During the annual general meeting, COO and Director Rosalind Brewer was quizzed on its plans to cash in on growing consumer demand.

Brewer tackled the question, but didn't give too much away, saying: "We do have a line that we would love to share with our customers later this year. So, it is in our plans. 

"We know our customers ask us that repeatedly and we'll be responding."

Food

Expanding food sales is a critical part of the brand's strategy; according to Brewer: "We've already grown the food business by 1.5 times since 2013 and looking forward, we plan to double our food business by the year 2021."

Last year, Starbucks' CEO Kevin Johnson revealed that plant-based alternatives account for one of the brand's 'fast-growing' categories, saying that items like non-dairy milk 'provide a significant opportunity to drive [sales] outside of our core morning sales window'.

The cookie is available at locations across the U.S.
