Slaughterhouse Probe Sought After Conscious Pig Found Hanging From Rail

A USDA report shows there was extreme animal suffering at the facility
PETA wants to see relevant parties prosecuted

Campaigners have called for a slaughterhouse probe after a report from the  U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed a conscious pig was left hanging from a rail at Oregon slaughterhouse Masami Foods.

According to the report, on July 24 a federal official found a conscious, gasping pig hanging upside down on a rail and lifting his/her head. The official said the pig was trying to right him/herself.

The worker was instructed to stun the animal, which took three attempts.

Investigation

Now animal rights charity PETA has written to  the U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon asking for an investigation into the slaughterhouse for what it describes as 'repeatedly violating the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act'. PETA wants criminal charges filed against the facility and the workers responsible for the animals suffering 'as appropriate'.

PETA Senior Vice President, Daphna Nachminovitch, said: "The latest disturbing revelations show that animals continue to die prolonged, agonizing deaths at Masami Foods.

"PETA is calling for a federal investigation on behalf of the pigs and cow who suffered at this facility and the members of the public who care about them."
