An Australian seafood boss has slammed a company selling vegan tuna as being a 'slap in the face' for the fishing industry.

Vegan company, Atlantic Natural Foods, who released a fishless tuna dubbed Tuno made primarily from soy protein, has received criticism from Seafood Industry Australia (SIA) for its similar packaging to canned tuna.

'Likely to breach the law'

According to ABC, Jane Lovell, Cheif Executive at SIA, said: "I don't know what the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission would think about this.

"Whether there is an intent to mislead or not, is irrelevant, if the overall branding creates a misleading impression then the behavior is likely to breach the law."

'False and misleading'

"If people want to be vegans that's up to them. I don't think we have high moral ground on that point, but I think this is verging on false and misleading," she added.

Lovell also said she doesn't 'quite understand' while vegans choose to consume plant-based alternatives that try and replicate the taste and texture of meat.
