A parent in Texas is furious that her four-year-old has been given non-vegan food at school - despite her request to serve him plant-based food only.

Kirby's Hopkins Elementary school's cafeteria served the boy dairy milk and breakfast tacos, and when confronted, a staff member said: "We denied your request."

Mother Danielle Williams and her family became plant-based for health reasons two months ago, and she has since provided the school administration with two doctor's notes containing lunchtime instructions.

Request

Williams recalls that she told the cafeteria staff: "You know, ma’am, he's not allowed to eat this.

"And she was fully aware and she said, 'well, we denied your request'."

The mother continues: "I was just stunned. My husband and I assumed that they were feeding him the food he was supposed to eat.

"I packed his food with him. She handed it back to me and said, 'We cannot accept this. You have to come back to the school every day at 11:30 a.m., sign him out, eat lunch with him and sign him back in'," Williams said.

'Forced to feed my child meat'

The mother was told she could not pack a lunch for her son due to safety procedures, citing that the school's Head Start program is federally funded and run, and has its own set of rules.

She added: "I feel like we're not being respected in what we choose not to eat.

"I feel like I'm being forced to feed my child meat when I don't want to, and I shouldn't be forced to feed them meat."

Yesterday, a spokesperson for the Family Service Association said they have resolved the issue and will be providing a vegan meal for the child.
