PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk

In this video, PBN Co-founder Robbie Lockie interviews Ingrid Newkirk - the Founder of animal rights charity PETA.

Although the charity sometimes faces criticism for its style of advocacy - which often includes nudity and shocking stunts - it has achieved many victories for animals over the years.

In this interview, Newkirk talks about the challenges of leading a large organization, some of her biggest wins, and some of the criticism she has faced - including over the euthanization of animals.

Animal activism

Speaking about the role of animal activism, Newkirk says: "I don't know that humans are necessarily born with compassion - although some are, but for many of use it's learned.

"Many of us make mistakes and have our eyes opened by certain things - I know I did. I always fished when I was growing up, I had my first fur coat at 19, and I loved animals, but back then, nobody really helped me make the connection...I didn't think about factory farming, I didn't think about steel traps or fur farming, and I didn't think about animals in the lab.

"Animal rights activists can help people develop empathy, given them understanding, show them their choices, and bring them along."
