A new vegan burger is set to take on the giants of the industry - boasting a raft of impressive nutritional credentials.
According to the makers of the Miami Burger, who call themselves 'professional health hackers', they have created a recipe which maintained the juiciness and flavour of the patty, but significantly limited the fat and calorie content.
"We've gone for rapeseed oil, which out of the 32 cooking oils available, is the healthiest in terms of saturated fat and it's also high in Omega 3 and monounsaturated fat. It's more expensive, but it's the right thing to do for us, and the right thing to do for people buying it," Tom Halford, Food Development Chef of Miami Burger, and a vegan himself, told Plant Based News.
"We've mixed it with water, so the burger still has a great juiciness profile, but it has 0.6g of saturated fat, unlike market leaders of which have up to 3000 percent more.
"In terms of texture or flavor, the burgers are 'meatier' and more flavorsome. Meat by itself isn't that flavorsome, so a beef burger by itself isn't that tasty. What we've tried to do is created a very well-seasoned burger, that tastes really nice, rather than directly replicating an unseasoned burger. So we've chosen flavor above similarity to beef."
Customers will be able to get their hands on the patty from today (July 8) as it launches in more than 280 Morrisons stores across the UK. To be sustainable, the brand resisted requests for it to be placed in the chilled packaging and has opted to be sold in the frozen aisle, avoiding the chilled section so it can remain a plastic-free company.
In addition, Miami Burger is currently in talks with a major global fast food retailer, and could end up on menus across the globe.
"The market leaders have done an amazing job in giving plant based consumers choice, but with 65 percent of the UK population overweight, we are here to offer everyone a genuinely healthy burger patty," said Halford. "It's great tasting plant based food without the bad stuff."
