A new seminar will be teaching medical professionals how to prevent cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes with the help of plant-based nutrition.
Held by the Plant Based Nutrition Support Group [PBNSG], the inaugural seminar will be taking place in Detroit, Michigan on December 7 - and will feature lectures from professionals such as Joel Kahn, MD, diabetes specialist Caroline Trapp, DNP, Robert Breakey, MD, and Elizabeth Swenor, DO.
The seminar, which is free and qualifies for academic credit with the Wayne State School of Medicine, aims to motivate other doctors to treat and prevent disease with a plant-based diet instead of pharmaceuticals.
The founder of PBNSG, Paul Chatlin himself shunned animal products from his diet under Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's coaching, while he was awaiting heart bypass surgery.
According to the organizers: "Mounting research points to the Standard American Diet as being largely responsible for the epidemic of chronic diseases that we are experiencing in America, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, Alzheimer's, several cancers and more.
"[Attendees will learn from] local practitioners how a plant-based diet can help your patients prevent, arrest and, in many cases, even reverse our nation's leading causes of disability and early death."
Dr. Kahn told VegNews about the benefits of a vegan diet: "The scientific evidence that plant-based nutrition can prevent, halt, and reverse the top 15 chronic diseases that afflict patients at low cost, low risk, and often equal or superior efficacy versus medications is powerful.
"The glaring lack of education and practical skills taught to doctors to assess and address nutrition in the office or hospital must be addressed as soon as possible - and our seminar is an important step."
Chatlin hopes the seminar, which will see around 60 doctors attending, will become a regular event.
