Nearly 40% Of British Columbians Under 35 Are Vegan Or Vegetarian, According To New Poll

The numbers are the highest in Canada
Vancouver, BC is extremely vegan-friendly

Almost 40 percent of British Columbians 35 and under identify as vegan or vegetarian, according to a new poll.

The poll - which also shows that the majority of Canadian vegans are under the age of 35 - was carried out by Dalhousie University's Dean of the Faculty of Management, Sylvain Charlebois.

Responses from 1,049 adult Canadians were used in the survey, which was conducted by third-party data collector Qualtrics. Results are considered accurate within plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Charlebois said: "It's quite astonishing. These numbers are the highest in the country."

Data

The percentage of vegan/vegetarian British Columbians is more than triple the average for all Canadians.

Just 2.3 percent of Canadians (all ages) identify as vegan  - up to 7.1 percent vegetarian.

In B.C., around 8.6 percent identified as vegetarian, with an additional 3.9 percent saying they are vegan.

Vancouver in British Columbia is considered by many to be extremely vegan-friendly, with a host of plant-based restaurants as well as many vegan options on the menu at other eateries.

According to local media: "There may be a stereotype that Vancouverites are pretty enthusiastic about vegan food.

"So be it."
