McDonald's launched a vegan burger at its global headquarters restaurant in Chicago last month.

The chain took some of its top menu items from around the world and added them to its Chicago West Loop neighborhood outlet.

Its vegan sandwich comes from India. The McAloo Tikki features a toasted bun filled with a veggie patty made with potatoes, pea and seasoning reminiscent of samosas; topped with fresh red onions, tomato slices, and an eggless tomato mayo.

"Customers have expressed interest in items from McDonald's restaurants located in India and we're excited to offer them the opportunity to try the longtime vegetarian favorite, McAloo Tikki," McDonald's Owner/Operator, Nick Karavites, said in a statement.

Vegan McDonald's

The fast-food giant has taken multiple steps towards increasing its vegan offerings in recent times. It rolled out its first plant-based burger - the McVegan - in Sweden and Finland at the end of 2017. It is currently trialing a new vegan burger - the El Veggo - in Finland.

And vegan options could be coming to the UK - last week it was rumored that the chain will be launching a veggie goujon sandwich and wrap in January.

When Plant Based News reached out to the chain, it was unable to confirm or deny the rumors.

Vegan on the agenda

In addition, a McDonald's boss recently hinted that the chain could have more vegan options in the pipeline.

Speaking at the recent Most Powerful Women Next Gen Summit in California Lucy Brady, a Senior Vice President for the fast food giant, said the company is tracking major trends and how to keep up with.

Leading vegan media outlet VegNews reported Brady as saying: "Plant-based protein is something we’re keeping our eye on."
