Vegan pizza brand Purezza is launching a Christmas Calzone, available at its London and Brighton branches.

The oven-baked special contains roast potatoes, vegan salami, mozzarella 2.0, sage and onion stuffing, rosemary and gravy, all topped with either cranberry or chilli jam.

The calzone is part of Purezza's three course Classico menu (£24.95), which also includes a welcome glass of prosecco, starters or either a two-person cashew cheese board or truffle mac & cheese, and puddings including mince pie dough balls or sticky toffee pudding.

Christmas pizza?

Think Christmas pizza is a crime against Italian cuisine?

Well, the Sicilians do actually have a pizza dedicated to the festive season called sfincione - although it’s pretty different from Purezza's idea. It’s basically the original deep pan pizza, made from a mix of pizza and bread dough and topped with tomatoes, onions, anchovies and lots of cheese.

'Sfincione' loosely translates as 'thick sponge' - and it can be up to 2cm thick which is interesting in a country that prides itself on its thin crusts. Rumor has it that it was created as a special bread for Christmas eve back in the 17th century by cloistered nuns.
