A 2011 survey conducted by Harris Interactive concluded that there are likely 16 million people now vegan or vegetarian! The survey had 1010 participants who were weighted proportionally with the country average for sex, race, region, etc. The study determined that about 5% of the population is vegetarian and about half of those people are vegan, whereas in 2009, only about 3% of the population was vegetarian and approximately one third of them were vegan.
Furthermore, the US Department of Agriculture estimates meat consumption has dropped by 12.2% between 2007 and 2012. In addition, according to a report by Mintel, vegetarian menus saw a 66% increase in the last three years in the US. Also, according to Google Trends, searches for the word “vegan” have tripled in the past 7 years. To add to this, over 100 meat substitutes were introduced in grocery stores in 2010 and 2011 alone!
So why is the US going vegan? Perhaps it has to do with films like Cowspiracy explaining the environmental impacts of animal agriculture, such as: Amazon deforestation, extreme water and land use, and greenhouse gas production. Or perhaps it has to with the fact that 14/15 of the top killers can either be treated, prevented or reversed with a whole-foods vegan diet. Or just maybe, people are starting to believe that it’s wrong to exploit and kill animals.
Whatever the reason, the animals and World are being saved. One step at a time.
