More than 1,000 health care professionals from over 25 countries will attend a groundbreaking plant-based conference this weekend in California.

The International Plant-based Nutrition Healthcare Conference (PBNHC) was launched in the fall of 2013 by the Plantrician Project - a U.S.-based non-profit with the mission to produce educational events, tools and resources for physicians and those they serve about the evidence-based efficacy of whole food, plant-based nutrition.

Speakers at the event will include T. Colin Campbell Ph.D, Michael Greger MD, Dean Ornish MD, and Joel Kahn MD, among others.

The first 2013 event was attended by 220 medical professionals, representing six countries: this fall sees the sixth annual PBNHC. Because interest in the conference is so high, organizers this week announced that live streaming will be available.  Click here for the conference schedule, with details about virtual attendance found here.

Susan Benigas, The Plantrician Project Founder and Co-founder of the International Plant-based Nutrition Healthcare Conference, told Plant Based News: "Plantrician, as you might assume, is where 'physician' and 'plant-based nutrition' merge.

"Our vision, from the start, has been a world in which all clinicians have been effectively trained in the health-protecting, disease-fighting power of whole-food, plant-based nutrition. We know that for every medical professional we reach, he or she has exponential impact, as they each touch thousands of patients.

"True to our slogan, 'Planting the seeds of change,' we sit back in awe as we witness how those seeds, planted over the past six years have germinated, are taking root, and starting to produce an incredible harvest in our quest to help usher in sustainable health, sustainable healthcare and a sustainable world."

Dr. Scott Stoll is a keynote speaker at the event

The event will open with Friday's opening welcome dinner, during which the Plantrician Project's Luminary Award will be presented. Past recipients include T. Colin Campbell, PhD, Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., MD, Dean Ornish, MD, FACLM, and Michael Klaper, MD.

Following the award presentation, Scott Stoll, MD, The Plantrician Project and conference co-founder and board chair, will officially kick-off the conference with his opening keynote presentation on Healthcare Organizational Transformation: What's Working and Why?

According to Scott Stoll: "Just as each physician or medical professional has exponential impact, we see health systems in the same way from an organizational standpoint. We're beginning to see health systems awaken to the fact that the status quo is no longer an option. We're committed to showcasing those visionary organizations that are truly on the forefront of integrating whole food, plant-based nutrition into their systems, while also advocating for a food-as-medicine first approach in the communities they serve."

Lifestyle choices

Benigas added: "Rooted in science, we always say that the best news any of us could ever hear is that the vast majority of our healthcare costs are tied to the treatment of conditions rooted in poor lifestyle choices.

"This means we can turn the tide on our noncommunicable disease trends and their associated costs before it's too late by prescribing a dietary lifestyle that's fiber-filled, nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich, health-protecting and disease-fighting - that which grows from the ground in as close to nature's package as possible."

The CME-accredited conference takes place on September 14-17 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront in San Diego, California.
