Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has caused a Twitter storm with a comment about cows.

The scientist, who often appears on televsion, took to the platform to say: "A cow is a biological machine invented by humans to turn grass into steak."

While it appears the public figure may have been commenting on how humans have genetically manipulated cows, the inevitable fallout saw vegans and animal lovers take to Twitter to condemn the tweet which amassed more than 27,000 retweets and 90,000 likes.

'Disappointed'

Among the angry comments from vegans - and pictures of steaks from omnivores - were a slew of commentators who said they were 'disappointed' by Tyson's tweet.

Nick Burgoyne‏ tweeted: "So disappointed you said this, Neil."

To which an unrepentant Tyson responded: "Hmm. Is that because the truth disturbs you? Or because you think it’s not true?"

Go us...

Perhaps the most prolific response came from Dailywire.com Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro.

The media figure, who has almost 700,000 followers on the platform, said: "We invented the cow? Go us!"

While some users argued over genetic modification, Judy Conservative waded into the row to say:‏ "LOL!  Some people need to sober up, read up, smarten up, GIVE UP LIVES TO GOD, the real 'inventor' of the COW!
