The HealthyTOKYO Cafe & Shop is the first 100 percent vegan cafe at the world's fourth most traveled airport.

Located at Terminal 2 at Haneda Airport (also known as Tokyo International Airport), the HealthyTOKYO Cafe & Shop was opened to meet the growing demand for plant-based foods and beverages in the region, and to cater for the increasing number of tourists visiting Japan.

It's estimated that some five percent of the population of Japan is vegetarian, with about three percent identified as vegan. And just like in other parts of the world, those figures are expected to rise in the coming years.

The company has had an online store for some time, and primarily focused on English-speakers living in Japan or English-speaking visitors. With its first brick and mortar store, the HealthyTOKYO Cafe & Shop is now embracing Tokyo natives too.

On the vegan menu

"We really wanted to make a cafe that everyone can enjoy," said Head of Operations at HealthyTOKYO K.K. David Israelsson.

"While all of our offerings are plant-based, we have created dishes that will be loved by vegans and omnivores alike. Our menus are designed to appeal to the tastes of locals and the increasing number of visitors to Japan."

Organic coffee, plant-based lattes, matcha tea, homemade ginger ale and lemonade, Japanese craft beers on tap and canned craft beers from the US are all available from the only vegan cafe at Haneda Airport.

Fresh food on offer includes vegan quiche and lasagna, healthy salad and plant-based sandwiches. Vegan bread is also available, and vegan desserts include a New York-style cheesecake and a 'groundbreaking all-natural melon pan in five flavors.'

All of the flour and rice used in the HealthyTOKYO Cafe & Shop is certified organic, and gluten-free options are always available.

Browsing the store shelves

The shop part of the HealthyTOKYO Cafe & Shop is stocked with gifts and snacks, including pure nut butters, organic matcha mixes and a huge selection of CBD oils.

The HealthyTOKYO Cafe & Shop opened on December 28, 2018, and is already reported to have served thousands of customers. It's located in the upper deck food area at Haneda Airport Terminal 2 and is open 365 days per year from 6.30 am until 8.30 pm.
