A conference focusing on the future of protein in New Zealand will be held in Auckland tomorrow by the New Zealand Vegan Society.

The event, which is aimed at the farming community and developers of plant-based foods, will tackle the question of 'New Zealand can lead the world in this exciting new technology'.

Speakers will include Lee-Ann Marsh from Beef and Lamb, and Simon Loveday from Ag Research. Following talks, canapes made using plant-based products by Sunfed Meats and the Beyond Burger will be on offer.

'World leaders'

Claire Insley, Media Spokesperson of the New Zealand Vegan Society, said: "New Zealand should be world leaders in this new race for plant-based proteins and we call upon the Government and the MPI to help farmers transition towards producing the type of food people want to eat.

"Our horticultural exports currently bring in $8 billion and increase every year. Farmers should be able to capitalize on our already high-end export market and reap the rewards."

The Society added that the 'smart farmer' should pay heed to changing attitudes around animal production with 'its inherent welfare problems, climate change issues and massive use of land and water towards a clean and green plant-based farm'.
