Factory farming not only causes immense suffering to animals, but it is also harmful to humans and is destroying the planet, according to a leading vegan advocate.

Leah Garcés is the President of animal-rights group Mercy For Animals (MFA) - the organization's first female president - taking on the role on October 1 this year.

She made the comments during an interview with Plant Based News Co-founder Robbie Lockie, for the PBN podcast.

Vegan advocate

Garcés, who has worked in animal advocacy for 20 years, spoke about her own vegan journey, as well the 2017 Extinction conference organized by Compassion In World Farming, where she used to work.

"I wanted to bring people together over the issue of factory farming," she said, "and show it's not just causing a great amount of suffering for animals, it's also destroying the planet.

"It was called extinction, not just because of the extinction of animals, but potentially the extinction of humans because of the impact factory farming is having."
