The ketogenic diet - where followers heavily restrict their carbohydrate intake - is one of the most popular global food fads.

Ketosis

Khambatta says many people try to use keto diets to control diabetes - but he says while it is tempting, it is essential to fully understand the possible longterm consequences of this type of diet.

He outlines exactly what ketosis is, as well as the associated risks.

According to Khambatta: "No matter how you slice it, low carbohydrate diets trick patients and doctors into believing that ketosis is an excellent longterm dietary strategy.

"In reality, the longterm consequences are often worse than the initial condition they were designed to reverse."
