The food industry lies to the public in order to make people eat meat, according to vegan actress and author Alicia Silverstone.

The Clueless star, who hasn't eaten meat for almost two decades, made the claims in a video for the nonprofit Farm Sanctuary’s Compassionate Meals program.

She explains: “I just have always been really interested in the truth in all areas of life.

"And so knowing the truth about where our food comes from is just so disturbing to me. Once you see it, there’s no way to go back from that for me.

"Our food is being hijacked and they’re telling you lies about what your food is. It’s just constant lies so that you’ll make choices that go against your nature.”

Perhaps because of this, The Kind Diet writer is non-judgmental when it comes to non-vegans.

She has said: "I totally don’t judge anything anyone else does. I’m only interested in helping provide information in case you want to know a piece of this secret I’ve found … If you don’t, all love and peace.”

The actress has spoken many times about bringing up her son, Bear Blu (6) vegan too, saying “[Bear] loves the food I give him. He’s not being deprived of anything. For him, having amazing fruit is like candy!” Bear says he enjoys the lifestyle because 'you don’t have to eat yucky meat'.

He enjoys foods like tacos and stir-fries. “I can make all those things based on what’s in the fridge," Silverstone says. "You always have a bean, you always have a whole grain.”

What's the best thing about veganism? Silverstone says: "The amazing thing about it is that it’s turned me into a health nut, because you feel so good, you feel so different.

“So being able to do something that is good for the Earth, good for the animals and good for you all at the same time seems like such a no-brainer. It’s like the biggest ‘Duh!'”
