A petition urging pizza chain Papa John's to add vegan cheese has been signed by more than 10,000 people.

Animal rights organization Animal Aid joined forces with news website Vegan Food UK to launch the petition.

The petition cites the growing number of people opting for vegan, vegetarian, and flexitarian diets as a major motivator in hospitality outlets offering plant-based fare, adding that more than 600,000 adults identify as 'vegans' in GB.

Vegan cheese

"Most other pizza chains have recognized the need for adequate vegan options and have started to offer vegan cheese, and so we are calling on Papa John's not to get left behind and to follow suit," Animal Aid Campaign Manager, Tod Bradbury said in a statement sent to Plant Based News. "Pizza without cheese just isn't the same."

"We are very happy to see that the petition has been met with such positivity from others, showing once more that the demand for plant-based food is there."

Vegan demand

"We are so pleased with how popular the campaign has been, so far," Liam Day, Co-founder of Vegan Food UK, added.

"It shows a real demand for vegan cheese and better vegan options at takeaway food establishments across the UK."

Bradbury and Day added that the majority of pizza chains already offer vegan cheese, including Pizza Express, Pizza Hut, Zizzi, and MOD Pizza.
