How To Use Your Skills To Become A Better Vegan Activist

2018 - what a year! It was probably one of the most progressive for the vegan movement and animal rights.

Among the many victories for animals, we saw big labels like Burberry, Chanel, and Versace ditch fur. A staggering 28,000 people worldwide attended their local Official Animal Rights March. California became the first U.S state to ban the sale of animal-tested products, and Marks & Spencer launched 60 new vegan products. On top of that, now Guatemala only has one animal circus left.

Due to the relentless efforts of activists, veganism is on the rise. But, of course, there is a lot of work still left to do. 2019 is now here and we must keep fighting for animal liberation.

So how could we achieve more? Well, whenever I am trying to change something, the first thing to do is – in the words of Michael Jackson – 'take a look at the man(woman/person) in the mirror!'

Ask yourself these questions: What am I good at? What are my passions? How can use that to help animals? Because using what you know already, might really improve yourself and your activism.

Everyone is good at something, whether it’s drawing, photography, organizational skills, writing, or making a very delicious vegan apple pie (mmm!).

You could use that something to help you. If you are doing what you enjoy while fighting for something you believe in, then it may have a better effect on others.

I think that the ideal attribute would be a skill that you good at, but also really enjoy doing. For example, you could choose a relaxing hobby like knitting, you could help by knitting little animals (out of vegan wool), and selling them to raise money for a sanctuary or perhaps create a jumper with 'GO VEGAN' spelled across it and wear it in public.

If you are good at organizing, you could organize an activism event. If you are good at cooking, you can share vegan recipes on social media. These are all forms of activism and will most likely make a positive impact. And there are so many more fun little things we can do to help.

My plans for 2019

In 2019, I am going to focus on writing, which I have always enjoyed doing. This year I want to write more speeches, raps, songs, poems, and stories – about animal rights of course – be more positive and improve my activism.

It feels weird writing about myself, but that is the only person I can focus on if I want to be more effective in helping others.

Being your best activist means you have to focus on yourself and how you can improve. We can always get better at everything, including animal rights activism.

I think it is better to try and be your best activist rather than the best activist because we can only strive to create a better version of ourselves. Find the strength and positivity in within you, you can help yourself and the animal rights movement.
