Campaigners at leading vegan charity Viva! have organized a nationwide day of action against supermarket giant Tesco, asking the store to dump Hogwood Farm as a supplier.

The farm, which houses over 15,000 pigs, made national headlines recently when Viva! released footage of the grim conditions these animals were kept in.

According to Viva! it is 'a prime example of the how government and industry are failing to protect the welfare of farmed animals in Britain'

Filth

Founder & Director of Viva! Campaigns, Juliet Gellatley, who investigated the conditions at the farm herself, said: "Pigs were so tightly crammed into a disgustingly dirty industrial unit that it was hard to walk through them.

"Many were covered in lacerations and all were smeared in filth. In another shed, pigs were kept in groups in bare concrete cells with slatted wooden gangways.

"There was the cynical addition of a chain with plastic sheathing for biting hung limply, its novelty value long gone.

"These, it is claimed, are the best animal welfare conditions in the world.”

Supplier

Despite the grim footage, Tesco has continued to back the farm, saying it is satisfied with the conditions animals are kept in, and is confident they are treated well. Hogwood Farm has also been approved by the Red Tractor ‘assurance scheme’ and the APHA.

But Juliet Gellatley says: "Viva! has filmed in dozens of pig farms and Hogwood is one of the worst – I was honestly sickened by what I saw there.

"Sadly, a profound abuse of animals takes place on all factory farms, which now produce over 90 per cent of all pig meat."

Action

In response to Tesco's support of Hogwood, Viva! Campaigns is launching a nationwide Day of Action against Tesco, with demonstrations outside stores across Britain asking them to dump Hogwood Farm as a supplier.

Demonstrators will assemble outside Tesco stores on August 12, with placards, leaflets, and petitions for the public to sign, asking Tesco to dump Hogwood Farm.

Petitions will later be handed to the government's Animal & Plant Health Agency [APHA], asking them to close the farm down.

This national Day of Action includes over 300 regional demonstrations across the UK - making it the biggest Viva! Campaigns’ Day of Action ever!

Gellatley concludes: "Viva! Campaigns is taking this action because Tesco is condoning cruelty and suffering. To consumers who are shocked by this investigation we say - choose kind and try a vegan diet. To Tesco we say – dump Hogwood pig farm."
