Chris Hemsworth is saving the planet with his vegan diet, according to a report by Men's Health magazine.

The star ditched animal products when building muscle for his leading role in movieThor, as revealed by trainer Luke Zocchi while promoting the movie.

According to Zocchi: "[Going plant-based]was a big experiment we tried to see if he could keep the muscle being vegan and it actually surprised me as well because we're all in this mentality of 'gotta eat animal protein, protein, protein' but you can get a lot of protein from beans. It got a little gassy at times."

According to the outlet, Hemsworth was inspired by younger brother Liam, who has been vegan for a number of years, and often speaks out on behalf of the lifestyle alongside vegan partner Miley Cyrus.

And Men's Health claims its readers are so impressed by the potential benefits of plant-based eating, that 20 percent of them said they would give it a go during an online Twitter poll.

There would be multiple benefits: alongside the ethical upsides of choosing vegan food, and the potential positive impact on health, a veg-heavy diet is much healthier for the planet.

As reported recently by Plant Based News, ditching meat and dairy is the most effective way individuals can lessen their impact on the planet, according to new data - which Men's Health referenced in its report.

Reducing food’s environmental impacts through producers and consumers - the biggest ever analysis of farming's effect on the earth - shows that while livestock takes up 83 percent of farmland, it provides just 18 percent of calories - and 37 percent of protein.

Single biggest way

Speaking to The Guardian, Joseph Poore at the University of Oxford, who led the research, said: "A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use.

"It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car. Agriculture is a sector that spans all the multitude of environmental problems.

"Really it is animal products that are responsible for so much of this. Avoiding consumption of animal products delivers far better environmental benefits than trying to purchase sustainable meat and dairy."
