UK bakery chain Greggs is set to pay its 25,000 employees a significant bonus - after the company's profits boomed following the launch of its vegan sausage roll.

The roll, which launched in January last year, racked up column inches and whipped up a social media furore - sparking unprecedented demand and generating major sales.

Now, staff will reportedly receive up to £300 extra in their pay packet this month - depending on how long they have worked for the company - in a payment Greggs has described as 'recognition of their crucial contribution to business success'.

Greggs said its 'now iconic' vegan sausage roll played a part in its 'phenomenal year', driving sales, alongside strong demand for its traditional ranges.

The chain has now expanded its vegan offering to capitalize on this demand - recently adding a vegan steak bake and donut to its shelves.

Greggs CEO Roger Whiteside said: "The major investments we have made in recent years to make Greggs an attractive choice in the food-on-the-go market are delivering. Consumers are responding very positively and we have seen increasing visits from both new and existing customers."
