Medical professionals including Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Michael Greger, and Dr. Vivian Chen among others weighed in with their top supplement picks.

Vitamin B12

"When it comes to supplements, I recommend that everybody takes vitamin B12," Dr. Neal Barnard told PBN. "That's just a B12 pill that you get in a bottle.

"Now in some foods, it's fortified, it's added to it, but most foods are not. So I encourage people to have it. And by the way, this doesn't only apply to vegans. A lot of people who are following a meaty diet are still low in B12, and it's good for everybody."

Dr. Vivian Chen agreed, adding: "The one supplement that I recommend for all vegans is B12, because there is not really a reliable plant-source of B12. Other than that, it really depends on your lifestyle, where you live, and the rest of your diet."

Vitamin D3

A top supplement pick for Dr. Greger is vitamin D3. "Some people need to take D3 supplements. Who are these people? People who get inadequate sun exposure.

"There are certain latitudes - like people living in London for example, where during the Winter months you are simply not going to make enough vitamin D."
