Dr. Pat O'Brown made the comments during an interview with The Spoon at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week.
Impossible Foods is currently best known for its Impossible Burger - currently in its 2.0 version, which uses heme to create a 'meaty' bite and flavor. But the company has big plans for more products.
The interview with Dr. Pat O'Brown
"We're starting to think about bringing together some other research threads where we've learned a lot of things...to work on what are called whole cuts of beef, which is like slices and steaks," he said.
"I would say the next categorically new product that we launch is almost certainly going to be a beef steak. To maximize progress on our mission the most impactful thing we can do is make products that compete against the incumbent beef industry.
"Steak...will have huge symbolic value. In fact what I would say is that it will be very disruptive not just to the beef industry but to the other sectors of the meat industry because...they'll be thinking 'that could have been us, and it will be us next'."
