UK high-street store, Boots, has launched a limited edition vegan 'no chicken and sweetcorn' sandwich and a meatless burger with red pepper slaw.

The new plant-based sandwich, which advertises the fact it contains 355 calories, features seasoned wheat gluten and soy protein pieces, with sweetcorn and seasoned vegan mayonnaise, on malted bread.

'Boots are upping their game'

Instagram account Accidentally Vegan UK pictures of the sandwich from user laurentxlford who wrote: "Okay why have I not seen anyone talking about this?! Vegan chicken and sweet corn looks like tuna sweet corn, tastes great. Boots are really upping their game!"

Replying to Scott Joynston, a Food Product Developer for Boots who helped design the sandwich, Lauren added: "It's nice to have a sandwich that's not fancy, I feel like all vegan sandwiches have too many vegetables in them."

While Boot's vegan burger with red pepper slaw, which contains 381 calories, caused some confusion with vegans over whether it should be eaten hot or cold.

"Do you have to warm it yourself? Can't imagine a cold burger would be nice," one Facebook user said.

"That was my thought - most Boots' food is ready to eat," replied another.

Vegan range

Last year, Boots released four vegan options to its range of sandwiches and salads - which are all included in the retailer's well-known meal deals.

The range featured a Coronation Veggies Sandwich, Tandoori-Style Beetroot Flatbread, Samosa Style Veggie Wrap and Sweet Potato Falafel Grain Box.

All options counted as one of your five-a-day servings of fruit or vegetables and were priced between £2.75 - £3.35.
